Sam helped me understand Florida's set up by writing this: "Florida PRN is a contractor for all the state boards (except nursing).  (PRN in this case stands for Practitioners  Resource Network)  So people refer cases to the Florida PRN.  This can be for addiction, HIV, other mental health issues, sex, etc.... that may affect their practice and endanger public health.  That can happen by an employer, healthcare professional, patient, etc, calling PRN.  PRN investigates and convinces folks to get evaluated &  treatment if needed  (gives them treatment center options).  For addiction, PRN usually gives people a 5 year contract with meeting stipulations, UDS, etc... and then advocates for them if any board action has or will occur.  Essentially, once a person is linked up with Florida PRN, the board (pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, etc) steps back and follows PRN recommendations.  Many cases, never go to the board."

The Practitioners  Resource Network is a 501(c)(3) (Tax Exempt) organization. It has a staff of 15 full time paid positions and two part time positions. It is free standing/separate from the Pharmacy State Board, and the State Pharmacy Professional Organizations. However, they are “the consultant on matters of impairment to all medical professional licensing Boards”. It does carry malpractice insurance on their Medical Director with “vicarious” coverage on his staff members. “We refer healthcare professionals for evaluation/treatment then monitor their continued recovery.”

What about funding? The organization does not charge client fees. It does receive funding through license renewal fees. Other sources of funding: Professional Associations (i.e. Podiatry Association, Dental Association, etc... ) Research projects and donations

Active clients include: All licensed healthcare professionals licensed by the Dept. of Health.
